Ports are 16-bit numbers (0-65535) that identify specific processes or services running on a device's operating system. They allow multiple applications to share the same IP address, by enabling incoming and outgoing data to be directed to the correct process or service. For example, web servers use port 80, while mail servers typically use port 25, allowing devices to communicate with these services specifically.
