A switch is a networking device that connects multiple devices within a local area network (LAN). It forwards incoming packets from one connected device to another based on their MAC addresses. Unlike routers, switches operate at Layer 2 of the OSI model and do not examine or modify packet headers; they simply forward packets between devices on the same LAN. Switches are typically faster and more efficient than routers for within-LAN traffic.
